Track Review: Camera Obscura - "My Maudlin Career"

Camera Obscura's last album, Lets Get Out Of This Country, came out in 2006, and it was definitely a grower for me. But man, did that album grow. At first listen it resembled the usual Belle & Sebastian-inspired pop that a bunch of bands have tried recently. But after a few listens, the melodies just became broader, the hooks became more immediate, and Tracyanne Campbell's lyrics became more heartfelt.
Well, they're back, and in top form. They have one of their new songs, "My Maudlin Career", streaming on their website (and now on YE-LID; you're welcome). Their album of the same name is to be released on April 20, and this is the perfect prep for it.
"I don't wanna be sad again," Campbell cooes, as the inflections in her voice get washed over by the 60s girl group instrumentation. It most resembles Lets Get Out Of This Country's standout "Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken", just slowed down and drawn out. If you've never listened to Camera Obscura, this is the perfect intro to what they're all about. And if this leak is any indication...well, lets just say my anticipation for the album just skyrocketed.
