Track Review: Neko Case - "Middle Cyclone"

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

If we're talking pure vocal talent, Neko Case has arguably...fuck that, hands down the best voice in indie music today. She hits notes that could make Whitney Houston jealous, and her tone is impeccable. Listening to her sing is an exercise of containing your disbelief at how amazing her voice his. Love her or hate her, you can't deny this.
Her new album, Middle Cyclone, comes out on March 3rd, and oddly enough, the best song on it is also one of her most understated vocal performances to date. Title track "Middle Cyclone" finds Ms. Case a little beaten down. "Can't scrape together quite enough / To ride the bus to the outskirts of the fact that I need love," she almost whispers, which is followed by a haunting music box in the background.
It's amazing to hear her letting the song do the heavy lifting for her rather than just belting it out. She doesn't try and hit any special notes, and her broken heart feels all the more real for it.
You can pre-order the album here.
