A name as casually self-depreciating as Jay Reatard may be an attempt to disarm critics by giving them such a easy target for insulting wordplay that a sort of journalistic integrity forces them to dig deeper and get creative with their punnery and witticisms. Well, I’m not one of those critics; you would have to be mentally disabled to think that “It Ain’t Gonna Save Me” is a good song.
God, it’s only the second time through on repeat and I’m suffering. This song isn’t a grower, it isn’t a doer, a thinker, or anything. It’s dead. The instrumentation plays a decent power-pop song, but the vocals, especially on the chorus, kill this deal for me. Grating and harpy-like, it’s an inane chant that grows old fast. Being annoying can be tolerated when innovation is at hand, but there is nothing new here. Jay Reatard’s new album Watch Me Fall is out August 18th on Matador, who should have known better than to have had anything to do with this stinker. Masochists, heed the streaming audio and download below. Better yet, try your hand at sadism and play it for someone else. Happy listening?
